South Africa is currently hosting the Soccer World Cup 2010 which began in Johannesburg around the middle of June wrapping up with a final match on July 11. It is anticipated to be the most watched sporting event with well over a billion people expected to follow the month long tournament between the world’s top 32 soccer playing nations. I was very fortunate to witness firsthand the spectacular beauty of this little known country when I had the opportunity this past winter to visit Faansie and Elmarie Basson on a farm just outside of Swellendam. After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam is the third oldest settlement in South Africa.

TRAINING HOLIDAY

 Farm entrance Excelsior             Sheep       Training

From 2010 we are offering the option of visiting us for a Training Holiday, where you will able to bring your dog and come and visit us for training.

During your stay you will have training sessions every day with my personal assistance. If you want to, you have the option of mixing  your training with some real sheep work on the farm. This will enable you and your dog to gain experience with real work on a day to day basis. You will also have the chance to see how I go about training my own young dogs.

We have a unique set up where we lamb, shear, wean and dock lamb’s tails every second month, so the chances are that you will be able to experience most of these important aspects of sheep farming during your stay.

Even if you do not have a dog, but want to experience working with dogs and sheep, you are also welcome.

For our overseas friends who would like to bring their own dog with them, we are experienced in travelling with dogs abroad, so will be able to assist and advise you on the best way to travel with your dog.

Please contact us for more information.

Judging and Training Clinics in Switzerland.Photo by K Favre

When I started out 16 years ago with my first sheepdog I never dreamed that I would travel all around the world because of them.  I was privileged and honored when Alberto Stern asked me if I would be available to judge their trial, in Switzerland, in April. This would be the Swiss handlers’ last chance to gain points to qualify for the Swiss team for the Continental Championship later this year.  It was also their first chance to gain some points for the team that will go the World Trial next year.

I flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg then to Zurich. From Zurich I had a short flight to Lugano.  Lugano is in the south of Switzerland not far from the Italian border. It was from the side window of this airplane that I had my first glimpse of the Swiss Alps. In one word it is massive; it felt like you could touch the snowed covered peaks below.  Alberto picked me up and we had an hours’ drive to the little town of Lostallo where he lives.  It was nice to see my friend again, the last time we saw each other was in the USA at Meeker last year.

For a couple of years now I have done some contract work during harvest time. I operated a combine for a rather big outfit. We would normally take two months to harvest more or less 3000ha. The machine I worked on was a 2388 Case International. It was very advanced hi-tech machine. It had a harvesting capacity of about 20 - 25 tons per hour. This specific combine also has a leveling system called a hill-co set. This enabled the machine to stay level even on the steepest hills. It had an air conditioned cab with a very impressive computer.

USA Trip 2009

I was supposed to write this on the flight home, but as usual that did not work out. So here we are almost three weeks back at home after our month long trip to the U.S.A. and thinking back on the trip, one thought goes through my mind ''a great experience''.
